Classical and Ancient Civilization

Hello. My name is Guy de la Bédoyère. I'm a British historian and writer, and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (FSA) in the UK. I studied History and Archaeology at Collingwood College, University of Durham 1977-80, University of London 1982-5, and Institute of Archaeology, University College, London 1985-7. From 1981-1999 I worked mostly for BBC Radio News. I'm married, and have four sons, and (currently) five grandchildren. I started this channel when I was a History and Classical Civilization teacher (2007-2016) but kept it on after I gave up teaching. I've written a large number of books, mainly about the Roman world, but also on other subjects as diverse as the Correspondence of Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn. Most recently I have written a history of Egypt's 18th Dynasty called Pharaohs of the Sun, published in July 2022 by Little, Brown. From 1998 to 2013 I took part regularly in Channel 4's Time Team archaeology series.
